A catalog for JEUNE, an experimental film event on modern jazz held in Japan on October 21 and 22, 1960. Edited by Shuji Terayama, it brought together some of Japan’s leading avant-garde artists, including Shuji Terayama, Tatsumi Hijikata, Eikoh Hosoe, Toru Takemitsu, Shuntaro Tanikawa, Hisae Imai, and Shintaro Ishihara. Though now almost forgotten, it was one of the most important experimental film events ever held in Japan.
A total of six films were screened at the event, including Catology, Terayama’s first experimental film. Today, however, all the films except The Navel and the A-Bomb by Eikoh Hosoe and Tatsumi Hijikata are considered lost.
The catalog includes numerous essays, roundtable discussions, and images, making it one of the very few—and arguably the finest—primary resources on this historic event.
