A photobook by photographer Masatoshi Naito focusing on itako, the female shamans of the Tohoku region in Japan. Itako are priestesses who channel the spirits of the deceased, and many of them were blind women. In Japanese folk beliefs, women were believed to possess stronger spiritual power, and these women played active roles as priestesses overseeing rituals. Around 1969, Naito closely documented their rituals, capturing their extraordinary realm with remarkable photographs.
